Reacher Season 4 Episode 4 Ending Explained: The Hoth Twist Changes Everything

Just when it seemed like Jack Reacher had settled into the role of protecting two women who had somehow ended up in the middle of a very dangerous conspiracy, Episode 4 decides to pull the rug out from under him. “Karambits and Pieces” turns the story around in a pretty big way, making it clear that the people Reacher thought he needed to protect may actually be two of the most dangerous people in the whole mess.
The episode spends much of its time digging into Anna Merrick’s suicide and the missing thumb drive containing classified information. Reacher and the people working with him start following the trail, and one possibility is that the drive was mailed to Lila Hoth and the woman she introduces as her mother, Amisha, who are staying at a Philadelphia hotel. Things get even stranger when Jacob Merrick finds out how his nephew was killed. The young man was murdered with a karambit, a curved blade associated with Indonesian martial arts, and that tiny detail suddenly gives Reacher’s investigation a very different direction.
The episode then ends with a wonderfully creepy little scene. Lila and Amisha are alone in their hotel room when they both pull out matching karambit knives and give each other the sort of smile that immediately tells you these two women are not who they have been pretending to be. The implication is pretty hard to miss: they may have been involved in Jacob’s nephew’s murder, and they clearly aren’t frightened about getting their hands dirty again. Reacher has spent the episode thinking the Hoths need protection, when the much bigger problem may be keeping an eye on the Hoths themselves.
It’s a major reveal, and the timing is interesting because it comes right around the middle of the season. There are still four episodes left, which means the show has plenty of room to let the consequences of the twist play out. It also marks a pretty significant change from Lee Child’s 2009 novel Gone Tomorrow, which is the book Season 4 is based on. The television version introduces the women differently, while the book gives the corresponding characters Russian backgrounds and reveals their connection to Al-Qaeda considerably later. The series, meanwhile, is keeping their exact loyalties somewhat murky for now and has chosen to show the audience their dangerous side much earlier.
That early reveal changes the way you look at everything they’ve done so far. Scenes that seemed harmless suddenly feel a little suspicious, and conversations Reacher had with the women can be read in a completely different way. That’s a useful trick for a show like Reacher, because the story doesn’t have to pretend the audience is still waiting to discover whether the Hoths are dangerous. We already know. The fun now is watching Reacher figure it out.
Readers of Gone Tomorrow also know that the Hoths eventually become much more than a couple of suspicious women hiding in a hotel room. Reacher has to deal with them directly, and those encounters get extremely physical. Considering how hard the action has already been hitting this season, the fights still waiting ahead could get pretty ugly.
What Could Happen in Episode 5?
Episode 5, titled “Bridge,” starts the second half of the season with the Hoth revelation hanging over everything. The story is no longer simply about keeping two supposedly vulnerable women alive while Reacher figures out why Anna Merrick died. Now the audience knows that Lila and Amisha can handle themselves very well, and probably don’t need Reacher’s protection nearly as much as he thinks they do.
The interesting question is how long it takes Reacher to realize that. He has been operating on one basic assumption up to this point: the Hoths are innocent people caught in a much larger conspiracy. The discovery of the karambit used to kill Jacob’s nephew should eventually force him to start looking back at everything that has happened. Reacher is usually very good at noticing when small details don’t fit, so once that particular clue clicks into place, the women are probably going to get a much closer look.
That could make Episode 5 less about discovering what the Hoths are hiding and more about watching Reacher slowly reconstruct the lie they’ve been telling him. Every conversation, every strange reaction and every unexplained detail can suddenly become evidence. That’s where the show has an advantage, because Reacher doesn’t need to be told that something feels wrong five times. Once he sees the pattern, he tends to move pretty quickly.
Lila and Amisha, meanwhile, are unlikely to sit around waiting for Reacher to catch up. Their cover has become much more fragile, the missing thumb drive is still out there and several different groups appear to be interested in getting their hands on it. As the pressure increases, the women may have to become more aggressive, which is probably bad news for anyone standing nearby.
That leaves the story heading toward a fairly nasty three-way collision between Reacher, the Hoths and the federal forces chasing the same information. The detective mystery is still there, but it has now been mixed with a cat-and-mouse game, and eventually there’s probably going to be a lot less talking and a lot more fighting.
For Reacher, the biggest problem is that he has been protecting the wrong people. For Lila and Amisha, the problem is that their disguise isn’t nearly as safe as it used to be. And somewhere in the middle of all this is a missing classified drive that seems to be worth killing for. At this point, Reacher’s investigation hasn’t just become more complicated. It has become personal, dangerous and considerably harder to walk away from.
