The upcoming Scrubs revival has been doing its best to bring the old Sacred Heart gang back together, and quite a few familiar faces are already returning. From major characters to some of the show’s more memorable supporting players, the new season is clearly leaning into that reunion factor. But there’s one familiar face fans were hoping to see again who now appears to be sitting this one out.
Ken Jenkins will not be returning as Dr. Bob Kelso, the cynical Chief of Medicine who became one of the most recognizable characters from the original series. Showrunner Aseem Batra confirmed that Jenkins won’t be back, even as the revival continues to add other familiar faces to its Season 2 cast. It’s disappointing news for fans who were hoping to see Kelso wandering through Sacred Heart again, but the reason has less to do with the story and more to do with real life.
A Growing Reunion Cast, With One Big Exception
The news comes at a time when Scrubs Season 2 is adding more and more returning cast members. Neil Flynn is coming back as The Janitor, while Scott Foley is also returning as Sean Kelly. The production has also announced that Johnny Kastl will reprise his role as the accident-prone Dr. Doug Murphy, who is expected to appear in one of the season’s later episodes.
Jenkins, though, won’t be joining them. Batra explained that leaving Dr. Kelso out wasn’t really a creative decision or something the writers had planned because they didn’t know what to do with the character. It’s simply one of those situations where real life gets in the way of a TV reunion.
“We all have to remember that when we reboot a show, we have to consider how people are doing, their health, and the circumstances unfolding in their lives. So, it’s not something he or we can control; it’s simply the situation,” Batra explained.
He also pointed out that bringing back an old cast isn’t always as straightforward as fans might imagine.
“It’s going great, but let’s all keep in mind—because we’re trying to bring back the people we love—that it doesn’t always work out, given people’s other commitments or the things happening in their lives.”
And that’s probably the part worth remembering here. A revival can bring back the characters on paper, but that doesn’t mean every actor will be able to return when the cameras start rolling.
Zach Braff Says Fans Should Respect Jenkins’ Situation
Batra’s comments are similar to what Zach Braff recently told Deadline while speaking alongside Sarah Chalke and Donald Faison. Braff knows how badly fans want to see the original cast back together, but he also urged viewers to keep Jenkins’ circumstances in mind.
Jenkins is 84, and Braff suggested that fans shouldn’t take his absence personally or assume the door is being closed for some creative reason. There’s simply a point where an actor’s age and personal circumstances have to come before what viewers might want from a revival.
“Fans want it so badly—and I respect that immensely; we do too—but I think we simply have to be respectful of his age as well,” Braff said. “I’ll keep trying, but I think that, given the current situation, it’s a bit of a tall order—let’s just put it that way.”
It’s a pretty understandable position. Fans naturally want every familiar character back, especially when a show is built around nostalgia, but sometimes there isn’t much a production can do about it.
What Dr. Kelso’s Absence Means for Scrubs
Dr. Bob Kelso was one of the most important figures in the original Scrubs. As Sacred Heart’s longtime Chief of Medicine, he was equal parts intimidating, sarcastic, and occasionally surprisingly human. His constant clashes with Dr. Perry Cox also became one of the show’s most reliable sources of comedy, while their rivalry gave the hospital a kind of institutional tension that Scrubs kept returning to.
That’s why Jenkins’ absence is going to be noticeable. The production had previously made it clear that bringing him back was something it wanted, so fans had plenty of reason to hope it might happen. Unfortunately, that doesn’t look like it will be happening in Season 2.
There’s still a possibility that things could change somewhere down the line, and the door hasn’t necessarily been slammed shut forever. For now, though, fans shouldn’t expect to see Dr. Kelso walking the halls of Sacred Heart when the second season arrives. It’s a shame, especially for a revival that is clearly trying to recreate some of the old Scrubs magic, but sometimes real life simply gets the final say.
