In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Travis Knight reflected on Masters of the Universe, revealing that Amazon placed its main focus on the film’s streaming performance rather than its potential success at the box office.
“Its streaming run was far more important to Amazon than its theatrical release,” Knight shared. “It wasn’t something I fully understood when we first started out. I wanted the trust they placed in us as filmmakers—and in the movie itself—to be rewarded in a way that ultimately didn’t align with my hopes and expectations. The film deserved a better fate than what it received, but I’ve made my peace with it.”
Recently, the director also addressed the possibility of a sequel, noting that any follow-up hinges entirely on Amazon’s approval. Knight certainly left the door open for a continuation in the live-action feature itself, teasing Princess Adora in the post-credits scene.
Everything to Know About the Live-Action He-Man Movie
Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You) leads the cast as Prince Adam, who transforms into the legendary hero He-Man whenever he raises his sword and invokes the power of Grayskull. The star-studded ensemble cast includes Camila Mendes (Riverdale) as Teela, Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok) as Man-At-Arms, Alison Brie (Together) as Evil-Lyn, Morena Baccarin (Deadpool) as the Sorceress, and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) taking on the iconic role of the villainous Skeletor.
Rounding out the classic He-Man characters are Goat Man (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson), Trap Jaw (Sam C. Wilson), Roboto (Kristen Wiig), Ram Man (Jon Xue Zhang), and, naturally, King Randor (James Purefoy) and Queen Marlena (Charlotte Riley). Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings, Bumblebee) directed the feature, bringing in frequent collaborator Chris Butler to polish the script, which was originally drafted by David Callaham (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse).
Originating as a popular Mattel toyline before expanding into a beloved animated franchise, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe first hit the big screen in 1987, starring Dolph Lundgren as Prince Adam alongside Frank Langella as Skeletor. Lundgren also makes a surprise cameo appearance in the new adaptation.
Masters of the Universe is currently available to stream globally on Prime Video.
