The upcoming live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie won’t be a retelling of the game, and that might be the right move. Paramount Pictures is developing the film with CD Projekt Red, but instead of putting V and Johnny Silverhand’s story on the big screen, the plan is to introduce a completely new story set in Night City. The project was announced on October 8, 2026, and there’s still a lot we don’t know about it, including who will direct or star in the movie.
Speaking to PAP Biznes, as reported by GamesRadar+, CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski explained that the film won’t follow the game plot scene by scene. The idea is to use the world the developers have already built while telling a story of its own. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, whose producing credits include the Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises, is attached to the project, but the rest of the creative team hasn’t been announced yet. Honestly, adapting the game’s main story would have been tricky anyway. Cyberpunk 2077 lets players make choices that affect V’s journey and, eventually, how it all ends. A movie can’t offer that same freedom. It would have to settle on one version of events, potentially leaving fans who made different choices feeling like their story had been ignored. Starting fresh gives the filmmakers a chance to explore Night City without having to pick one ending and treat it as the definitive one.
What Will the Cyberpunk 2077 Movie Be About? Is Keanu Reeves Returning?
In the game, V is a mercenary who gets caught up in a disastrous heist involving a valuable biochip stolen from Arasaka, one of Night City’s most powerful corporations. Things go badly, and V ends up sharing their mind with Johnny Silverhand, a digital version of the rebellious rocker and terrorist played by Keanu Reeves. Their uneasy relationship becomes one of the game’s biggest draws, so it’s understandable that fans might expect the movie to bring them back. That hasn’t been confirmed, though. Reeves has not been announced for the film, and with the story taking a different direction, there’s no guarantee Johnny Silverhand will even be part of it. He’s one of the most recognizable characters in the franchise, but the movie doesn’t necessarily need to rely on familiar faces to make Night City interesting.
CD Projekt Red has already tried this approach with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the Netflix anime that arrived in 2022. Rather than retelling V’s story, the series followed different characters and explored another side of the same world. It developed its own identity while still feeling unmistakably like Cyberpunk. If the live-action movie can pull off something similar, it could be a good way to expand the franchise without simply repeating what players have already experienced. There’s a comparison to Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise, too. Zach Cregger’s 2026 film took a new approach instead of directly adapting one particular game. The broader point is that an established video game universe doesn’t always need to revisit its most familiar story to work on screen. Of course, a different storyline by itself doesn’t guarantee a good movie, but it gives the filmmakers more room to try something new.
Bringing Night City to Life Could Be the Biggest Challenge
The story is only part of the job. Night City is a huge reason Cyberpunk 2077 stands out, with its towering buildings, flashy technology, cybernetic enhancements and corporations that seem to have more power than the people living under them. Beneath all the neon and futuristic gadgets, the setting is also about inequality, desperation and what happens when money and technology become more important than human lives. Getting that world right in live-action won’t be cheap or easy. The production will need convincing visual effects and detailed sets, but looking impressive isn’t enough. Night City can be spectacular to look at, yet the darker ideas behind it are what give the setting its character. If the film focuses too much on action and futuristic spectacle, it risks losing what made the game feel different in the first place.
There’s still no release date for the Cyberpunk 2077 movie, and Paramount and CD Projekt Red have yet to reveal its director or cast. For now, the main detail we have is the decision to tell an original story rather than follow V’s adventures. That leaves plenty of questions about who the film will focus on and what kind of trouble they’ll find themselves in. At least the filmmakers won’t be short of material. Night City is full of stories beyond the one players know, and the movie has an opportunity to show us a different part of it. Whether that turns into something worthwhile will depend on the writing and how well the film captures the game’s world, not just how much neon it can fit on screen.
