The new teaser for Dune: Part Three gives us a better look at one of the film’s biggest conflicts, and it isn’t just about armies fighting over Arrakis. Zendaya’s Chani appears to have a much larger role this time around, and one tense moment between her and Paul Atreides suggests their relationship is far from being repaired. In fact, she could become one of the few people willing to stand up to the man who now rules the known universe.
Denis Villeneuve is returning to Arrakis for the final chapter of his Dune trilogy, with Timothée Chalamet once again playing Paul. But this isn’t the young heir we met in the first film. Nearly 20 years have passed since the events of Dune: Part Two, and Paul has become an Emperor whose rise to power has helped unleash a devastating holy war across the galaxy. He may have won the throne, but that doesn’t mean he’s in control of everything that comes with it.
Chalamet and Zendaya are both back, alongside Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, and Florence Pugh. Anya Taylor-Joy also returns as Alia Atreides, who is expected to have a more significant part in the story. The film is scheduled to begin its international theatrical release on December 16, 2026, with Warner Bros. launching the new teaser as advance ticket sales get underway. And with Avengers: Doomsday also arriving in December, the two films are heading into what could be a very busy period at the box office.
The most interesting moment in the teaser, though, belongs to Chani. During a confrontation with Paul, she shoves him and accuses him of going back on a promise he made to her. “You promised me you would never take power in your name,” she tells him. There’s a lot of hurt behind those words, but there’s anger there, too. Chani isn’t simply watching the man she loves change into someone she no longer recognises. She’s confronting him about the choices that brought him to this point.
That scene could be important for more than just their relationship. Paul has enormous political and military power by this stage, and very few people are in a position to challenge him directly. Chani, however, has never been particularly interested in accepting the idea that Paul is some kind of chosen savior. If she’s willing to stand against him now, their personal conflict could become part of a much larger struggle over the future of Arrakis.
Why Chani’s Role in ‘Dune: Part Three’ Matters So Much
Chani’s growing importance is one of the more interesting changes Denis Villeneuve has made to Frank Herbert’s story. In the original books, her relationship with Paul develops differently, but the films have given her a much stronger opposition to the Fremen messianic prophecy and what it means for her people. She doesn’t see Paul’s rise as a simple story of liberation, and the ending of Dune: Part Two made that pretty clear.
When Paul drinks the Water of Life and embraces his role as the figure the Fremen have been waiting for, Chani watches with horror rather than relief. She knows the prophecy has been used to influence her people, and she has good reason to worry about where it will lead. Paul may believe he’s doing what needs to be done, but Chani sees the danger in turning a political leader into a religious symbol. Once people start believing someone has a divine right to rule, questioning that person becomes a lot harder.
Then comes Paul’s decision to marry Princess Irulan, played by Florence Pugh, as a way to secure his position and strengthen his claim to the throne. For Paul, it’s a political move. For Chani, it’s another betrayal, coming on top of everything else he’s done. She leaves him behind and rides out into the desert alone, refusing to stand by and accept the future he’s chosen.
The new teaser suggests that anger hasn’t gone away. Chani isn’t suddenly ready to forgive Paul just because he’s now Emperor, and there’s little reason to think she’ll quietly accept his decisions from here on. Her feelings for him may still be complicated, but that doesn’t mean she’ll let those feelings stop her from challenging him.
And that’s what makes her role in Dune: Part Three worth watching. Paul has spent years becoming the very kind of powerful figure Chani feared he would become. He can command armies and influence the fate of entire worlds, but he can’t necessarily make the people closest to him believe in what he’s doing. Chani may not have the power of an Emperor, yet she understands what Paul’s rise has cost the Fremen better than most.
Whether she can actually change his course is another question. The teaser doesn’t reveal how their confrontation plays out, or whether Paul is capable of listening to someone who refuses to treat him like a messiah. But if the film follows through on what this first look suggests, Chani won’t simply be watching Paul’s story unfold from the sidelines. She could be one of the people who forces him to face what his rule has done, and perhaps the one person he can’t afford to ignore.
