Reacher Season 4 Episode 7 Recap: A High-Octane Thrill Ride Ends in Explosive Uncertainty

Reacher Season 4 is almost at the finish line, and Episode 7, “Vote for Sampson,” wastes very little time getting there. After everything that has happened this season, the story has now grown way beyond the original investigation. We’re dealing with bio-weapons, dark web deals, political revenge, and a formula that could cause a whole lot of damage if it ends up in the wrong hands. Reacher and the others are running out of time, and by the end of the episode, one major character’s fate is left hanging after a pretty massive explosion.
A High-Stakes Rescue and the Truth Behind the Formula
The episode picks up from the previous cliffhanger, with Reacher and Detective Tamara Green tied up in the woods while a group of armed mercenaries prepares to get rid of them. It’s one of those rare moments where Reacher actually looks like he might be in serious trouble. He’s usually the person everyone else is afraid of, so seeing him restrained and outnumbered gives the scene a different feel. Just when it looks like things are about to get very ugly, Springfield shows up.
Springfield, who works as Congressman Sampson’s campaign manager, had been following a lead connected to the suspicious photograph of Anna Merrick. He happened to see Reacher and Green being forced into an unmarked van and followed the group, which turns out to be extremely convenient timing. His arrival distracts the mercenaries just long enough for Reacher and Green to fight back. And, naturally, once Reacher gets loose, things get brutal very quickly. The mercenaries don’t exactly get much of a chance to rethink their career choices.
The group then tracks down Leo Ahlquist, hoping he can finally explain what the mysterious drive is actually connected to. The interrogation is very much in Reacher territory—quiet, uncomfortable, and with the feeling that everyone in the room already knows how this is going to end. Ahlquist eventually reveals that the blurry image in Anna Merrick’s photograph is actually a hidden schematic for a biochemical weapon based on classified government research. With modern AI rendering technology, someone with the right skills could decode the image and finish the formula.
That makes Ahlquist a pretty serious problem. He knows too much, and worse, he has the knowledge needed to help the people behind the conspiracy complete the weapon. Reacher decides there’s no safe way to leave him alive and kills him on the spot. It’s cold, but from Reacher’s point of view, letting that information walk out the door would be even worse.
Clearing Names and Unmasking the Real Threat
The political side of the story also starts making a lot more sense. For most of the season, Congressman Sampson has been surrounded by enough suspicion that it was easy to wonder whether he was secretly involved in the whole government cover-up. Episode 7 finally clears that up. Sampson had no idea about the illegal bio-weapons operation, and the episode makes it clear that he would have shut it down if he had known what was really happening.
The real problem is Lila and Amisha Hoth. Their reasons for doing all this aren’t exactly complicated, either. There’s money involved, obviously, but Amisha also has a personal grudge against Sampson. Years earlier, Sampson commanded a military operation that resulted in the death of an Indonesian general Amisha had served. So this isn’t just business for her. She has been carrying that anger for a long time.
The Hoths’ plan is particularly nasty. They want to stage a public demonstration of the chemical weapon so there’s no question about what it can do. Once everyone has seen the damage, they plan to sell the completed formula to the highest bidder through the dark web. At that point, it becomes much bigger than a problem for Reacher or the police. Anyone with enough money could potentially get their hands on it.
Detective Docherty realizes pretty quickly that normal police procedure isn’t going to be enough here. Instead of continuing to treat Jacob Merrick as another suspect, Docherty quietly releases him from custody so he can get back in the fight with Reacher’s team. It’s a small moment, but it matters because the group is going to need every person they can get.
A Deadly Distraction and a Heroic Sacrifice
The team becomes convinced that Philadelphia is where Lila and Amisha will test the weapon. Docherty works with local authorities to organize a large police operation, expecting the criminals to make their move there. But then… nothing happens. The streets are quiet, the trap is set, and the people they are waiting for simply never show up.
It turns out the entire operation was a distraction. Reacher realizes that Philadelphia was never the real target. The Hoths were keeping everyone busy while they went after Congressman Sampson at his political fundraiser. By the time Reacher and the others figure it out and race to the event, they’re already behind.
Inside the packed fundraiser, Sampson notices someone moving toward the crowd with what appears to be a suicide bomb. He doesn’t hesitate. Instead of running or waiting for security to handle it, Sampson tackles the bomber and forces him through the doors and toward a nearby river. It’s a very old-school military instinct from someone who knows exactly what a few seconds can mean when an explosive is involved.
The bomb goes off underwater, sending a huge blast through the river and shaking the area around it. And that’s where the episode cuts out, leaving Sampson’s fate completely unclear. Did he survive? Did the water absorb enough of the blast to save him? Or did he knowingly make the final sacrifice to protect everyone at the fundraiser?
With only one episode left, Reacher is clearly saving that answer for the finale. And considering how much this season has been building toward the Hoths, the weapon, and Sampson’s political future, there’s still plenty left to settle.
