The Future of Reacher: Which Book Will Season 5 Be Based On and What Will It Be About?

Amazon Prime Video has officially renewed Reacher for Season 5, so Jack Reacher isn’t disappearing anytime soon. After Season 4 adapted Lee Child’s 2009 novel Gone Tomorrow, the show is reportedly moving on to Make Me, the 20th book in the series, originally published in 2015. It’s an interesting choice because the story takes Reacher away from some of the larger military and government-related plots and puts him back into the kind of strange, isolated community that worked so well for the show in its first season. In other words, it sounds like the series is going back to basics a little.
Small-Town Mystery Meets Dark Web Crime
The story begins when Reacher gets off a train in a small Midwestern town called Mother’s Rest. He has no real reason to be there beyond curiosity about the name, which is pretty much the most Reacher way possible to start a new investigation. Once he arrives, though, he meets Michelle Chang, a former FBI agent who is now working as a private investigator. Chang is looking for her missing partner, and Reacher naturally gets pulled into the search. What initially looks like a straightforward missing-person case soon gets much darker, involving local criminals, cybercrime and disturbing activity hidden away on the deep web. It gives the season a different flavor from the previous stories, with Reacher’s old-school approach and physical strength being put up against people operating in a much more digital world.
Cast and Character Dynamics
Alan Ritchson will once again lead the series as Jack Reacher, and Amanda Ip joins him as Michelle Chang. Chang isn’t being positioned as someone who simply needs Reacher to save the day, either. She is capable in her own right and is written as someone who can keep up with him both intellectually and tactically, which should make their partnership more interesting. Jay Baruchel is also joining the cast as Chief Buck Bauer, while Kevin Durand will play Nokes and Ciara Bravo will appear as Eunice. A strong Reacher story usually works best when the character has someone around who can challenge him rather than just stand behind him, so the Reacher-Chang dynamic could end up being one of the better parts of the new season.
Production and What’s Coming Next
Production on Season 5 reportedly began in Ontario in July 2026 under the working title HONCHO, with filming expected to continue through December. If Prime Video sticks to the production schedule and release pattern the series has established, fans could be waiting until late 2027 or possibly early 2028 to see the new episodes. That is still a long way off, but the franchise itself is getting busier in the meantime. Amazon is also expanding the Reacher universe with Neagley, the Maria Sten-led spin-off, which is scheduled to arrive in September 2026. So even if Reacher himself takes a while to return, there should be plenty happening around the character before Season 5 finally gets here.
