Kayce Dutton has spent years trying to protect his family, but in Marshals, that instinct could end up pushing his son away. The Yellowstone spinoff, starring Luke Grimes, has already put Kayce in a very different place after he leaves the ranch behind to become a U.S. Marshal. Now, with Season 2 on the way, there’s another problem he can’t solve simply by stepping in and taking control: his relationship with Tate.
Speaking to ScreenRant, Grimes explained that Kayce and Tate’s relationship will be a major part of the new season. Kayce knows his son has been through far more than any kid should have to deal with, and he feels guilty about it. He wants to help Tate move past everything that’s happened, but there’s a problem. Kayce doesn’t really know what his son needs anymore, and Tate isn’t a little boy who can simply be kept out of harm’s way.
Tate’s childhood has been brutal, to put it mildly. He’s been kidnapped twice, witnessed plenty of violence and lost his mother, Monica, before the events of the spinoff began. Then there’s the death of his grandfather, John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner in Yellowstone. By the time Season 2 rolls around, Tate is turning seventeen and trying to figure out what kind of life he wants. Kayce still sees a son who needs protecting, while Tate seems increasingly ready to make his own decisions.
Why Kayce and Tate Could Drift Further Apart in Marshals Season 2
Grimes has suggested that Kayce’s guilt is a big part of the problem. He knows Tate has been forced into situations no child should ever experience, including having to kill to survive. As a father, Kayce wants to make things right somehow. But wanting to fix everything and actually knowing how to help are two very different things. That’s where the tension comes in. Kayce keeps looking for ways to ease his son’s pain, but he may be going about it the wrong way. He’s so focused on protecting Tate that he risks overlooking what Tate actually wants. And with the teenager starting to make decisions about his own future, the two aren’t always going to see eye to eye.
The trouble has already started to show in the early episodes of Season 2. Even after Tate makes it home following the Season 1 finale, the family’s problems don’t magically disappear. Getting him back was one thing; figuring out how they move forward is another. Tate seems more determined to make his own choices, while Kayce is still struggling to accept that keeping his son safe doesn’t mean controlling every part of his life.
It’s a familiar kind of conflict, but there’s a lot of history behind it. The Dutton family has never been particularly good at separating love from control, and Yellowstone spent much of its run showing how that could tear a family apart. John Dutton’s determination to protect the ranch often came at the expense of his relationships with his children. Kayce wanted to get away from that world and the damage it caused, but he could now be repeating some of the same mistakes with Tate, even if his intentions are very different.
Is Kayce Repeating John Dutton’s Mistakes?
That’s what makes this storyline interesting. Kayce isn’t John, and he isn’t trying to protect the Yellowstone Ranch at all costs anymore. But he has inherited some of the same instincts, particularly the belief that keeping his family safe is his responsibility, no matter what it takes. The problem is that Tate has been through so much that Kayce’s attempts to protect him can easily become another source of pressure. His son needs room to grow up, make choices and work out who he wants to be. Kayce, meanwhile, has to accept that he can’t undo the past or shield Tate from every bad thing that might happen next.
For a family that has spent years dealing with tragedy and violence, that’s easier said than done. Kayce may genuinely want to break the cycle that damaged his own family, but doing so will require more than leaving the ranch behind. He’ll have to change how he approaches being a father, too.
Could Kayce and Tate’s Relationship Be Damaged Beyond Repair?
Grimes’ comments suggest that father and son have a difficult road ahead, although he hasn’t revealed where their relationship will end up by the Season 2 finale. There’s a real possibility that their disagreements could push them further apart, especially if Kayce continues trying to make decisions for Tate instead of listening to him. That doesn’t necessarily mean the two are headed for a permanent split. But their relationship clearly isn’t going to be fixed overnight, and the fact that Tate is growing up makes things more complicated. Kayce has to learn how to be there for his son without treating him like someone who can’t handle life on his own.
The Dutton family has already lost so much, and Kayce has spent a long time trying to keep what remains of it together. The painful irony is that he could end up hurting Tate while trying to protect him. If Marshals Season 2 follows through on that conflict, Kayce’s biggest challenge may not be dealing with dangerous criminals at all. It may be learning when to step back and let his son find his own way.
